Dear IPS Community,

The end of this school year is quickly approaching. I wish I could say the same for COVID-19. Most of all I wish I had answers to the questions from the many IPS community members I have spoken with. I know parents want to know what school will look like for their children, teachers want to know what their job situation will be. All the while trying to stay healthy, trying to be optimistic, some dealing with financial hardship.

“In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers.”

– Mr. Rogers

I don’t have the answers, no one does. But I approach every inquiry with compassion and patience. I welcome these conversations because we are a community and I want you to know that you are heard. I want to assure you that we are working on Plan A, Plan B and Plan C. When we are told what schools will be able to do come September we will inform you and quickly put one of these plans into action.

We have decided to cancel our Summer Program. For those who have signed up, the business office will be sending out refund checks. If you have signed up and are not at your home address, please email Charlene at and provide her with your current address. We may offer a Zoom option for families who are interested.

We hope we will need time this summer to prepare the IPS locations to open under new guidelines in September. I know you all hope the same, whether your child is enrolled at IPS or at another school.

I continue to enjoy watching on the Zoom sessions how the children have grown since school began. Even in this challenging time kids continue to thrive. They set a great example for me to greet each day with positive energy and have fun! I am so grateful for their spirit.

Enjoy the weekend,

Donna Cohen

Information is emerging about Pediatric Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome, or PMIS, a new health condition appearing in children in New York City and elsewhere, which may be associated with COVID-19 in children.  Here is a letter and fact sheet we received from the NYC Department of Health.
