IPS is in our last week of school before the two-week holiday vacation, but we are already preparing for the Spring 2020 after school session, which begins upon our return to school on Monday, January 6th. Traditionally, our spring season has a higher turnout, as families are now settled into school and the children have acclimated to the daily routines. It’s also a great way for children to make new friends and reconnect with old friends of all preschool ages.
Have you signed up your child(ren) for one (or more) after school programs yet? Still having trouble deciding what to choose? Here’s a breakdown of what we offer and why it’s the perfect place for your child this spring!
Sports: This spring, children can choose from a variety of physical activities to strengthen hand/eye coordination, gross motor skills, balance, and agility. At both locations, we offer tennis (via the Children’s Athletic Training School), soccer (through Super Soccer Stars, and basketball (by way of West Side Hoops). Our very own Mr. Doug teaches Chibikko Karate at 76th Street and 86th Street as well. And, as a new addition to our school, Jodi’s Gym is offering a wonderful gymnastics program for our half-day children (from 12:30pm-1:30pm, with lunch from 12:00pm-12:30pm supervised by an IPS teacher). It’s a great way to introduce your child to a longer school day and to incorporate some extra movement into your child’s day!
Science, Sensory and Other Subjects: IPS teachers Ms. Dalia and Ms. Deb teach a clay class at 76th Street and 86th Street respectively. Clay is not only a wonderful artistic medium, but it also provides practice with strengthening fine motor skills while pushing, pinching, and molding the clay. It’s also a great way for children to engage in a sensory experience, which helps regulate and calm the body. For those looking for a class combining math, science, and sensory skills, sign up for TasteBuds Kitchen, an exciting cooking class with an “end result” every time: a delicious treat to taste and/or take home! New York City-based NORY provides IPS with a STEM Robotics and Science class, blending the all-important subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math (hence, STEM). Mr. Doug’s Music Academy dives deeper into the world of song, instruments, and the like. Finally, a new program entitled Playful Literacy is set to begin in January 2020, which will teach pre-reading and writing skills in game form, supporting the IPS play-based learning philosophy!
Strategy and Showtime: Chess@3’s Chess class was a big hit during the fall 2019 season. Children ages three and up are introduced to the game and its pieces (pawns, knights, etc.) in story and play form. Chess teaches children patience, problem solving, and to think strategically…all important life skills! TADA! Theater supplies our students with a forum for acting, singing, and performing/speaking in front of a group. It’s a great program not only for the vivacious child, but also for those who are more introverted, as it teaches children to be comfortable with themselves and with others!
Don’t forget…the Spring 2020 after school season at IPS starts the week of Monday, January 6th. Be sure to sign up prior to the new year in order to secure your child’s program, as there is a minimum enrollment for most/all classes!
Looking forward to seeing you in the new year!
