After School Classes: 3:00 to 4:00 PM
Art! Clay! Karate! Sports! Theater!
Our students don’t stop learning when the school day ends. We collaborate with specialists from all over New York City to give our students extracurricular choices to fit a variety of developmentally appropriate skills and interests. These diverse after school activities enhance our play-based curriculum and further the mission of the school to create well-rounded learners. There’s something for everyone!
After School Classes are open to all children in our 3s and 4/5s programs (Green Rooms and Pre-K) and select classes are open to children in our 2s programs. For Fall 2023, programming will begin during the week of September 18, 2023 and will run through the week of December 18, 2023. Classes will run from 3:00 to 4:00 PM. The children will be provided a snack and use the bathroom from 3:00 to 3:15 PM and then engage in the after-school program from 3:15 to 4:00 PM. An IPS teacher will remain with the children for the duration of the class.

Class Descriptions
Children will explore the wonderful three-dimensional properties of this “magical mud.” They can pound and press, pinch and piece together forms as dictated by their imagination. Abstract or representational? Working with clay allows not only for fluid creativity, but serves to strengthen hand and finger muscles, critical in the development of fine motor skills. The pieces made in this class will be fired and glazed in a kiln, their transformation providing wondrous lessons in science. The bottom line? Playing with clay is messy, creative, limitless, and just plain FUN!
Team-taught by a professional director/choreographer and a musical director, this class supports a child’s natural inclination for dramatic play while learning the basic elements of musical theater. Learn how to act, sing, and dance! The final class will include a half-hour performance by the children. Great for building self-esteem and comfort with speaking in front of a group!
“An exuberant introduction to a range of our wonderful sports programming including HappyFeet Soccer, Hooray For Hoops Basketball, Fit Kids Balance & Agility Bonanza, T-Ball Fun Ball and MUCH MORE! Our coaches are warm, friendly, silly and VERY experienced working with young children. The children learn tons, get a great fitness workout and the giggle factor is off the charts! HappyFIT is a wonderful, totally age-appropriate way to give children a well-rounded ‘first sports experience’!”
A great first introduction to martial arts. The students will learn Japanese terminology as well as balance, punches, kicks, blocks, break-falls, and more. Each child will have the opportunity to advance in ranks/belts and be given a gi (karate uniform). Douglas DaSilva is an Associate Instructor for the Randolph Martial Arts Academy and is the music specialty teacher for IPS.
During the class, we will unleash the creative superpower in every child. We will use different art techniques and materials to explore how art can bring joy, develop concentration and creativity, and help with self-motivation and risk-taking. Preschoolers are naturally curious, so our young artists will have a chance to discover different art mediums. Come and join me!
