The end of the 2019-2020 school year has arrived, and with it comes end-of-the-year ceremonies for our Red (2s), Green (3s), Pre-K (4s), and Junior K (4s/5s) classes. Usually, this time of year brings parents and children together within the classrooms to celebrate this milestone together. Unfortunately, COVID-19 derailed our plans…but not to worry, the teachers at The International Preschools provided its students with memorable events to close out this school year!
This week’s blog post is an updated version of one that originally ran in May 2017.
The last few weeks of classes at The International Preschools are exciting for our students. Teachers and children begin play-based learning activities to celebrate the end of the school year: classroom parties with parents, end-of-the-year gifts, and memory books.
But after the festivities have concluded, what’s next? The “what’s next,” for some children, can be filled with uncertainty, sadness, or fear. Sometimes, these feelings can result in regressing behaviors, such as difficulty separating from parents or caregivers. This is an opportunity for children to develop life-strategies for transitioning between one set of routines towards another exciting phase in their lives.
Summer is only a few weeks away, and with it comes the start of IPS Summer Camp! Camp runs from Tuesday, June 11th through Friday, August 2nd. Our enrollment will close on Monday, May 20th, so if you haven’t signed up yet, there’s only a few days left to do so!

Throughout the year, The International Preschools hosts events for families and friends to come together and not only learn about our school, but to celebrate its supportive community. Our Grandparents and Special Friends Day is an annual event where extended members of our students’ families and/or close friends are invited to spend some time inside of the classrooms. This year, Grandparents and Special Friends Day will take place on Thursday, May 9th and Friday, May 10th. Read on to find out more about this special fete!
Each year, The International Preschools hosts an event called the Fathers and Special Friends Read-Aloud. It was created ten years ago to foster a love of reading in young children. Because, in the past, mothers and female relatives had often made up the majority of guest readers, the Fathers and Special Friends Read-Aloud provided an opportunity for fathers, as well as other male relatives and friends (brothers, grandfathers, uncles, neighbors, etc.), to model positive feelings about reading to preschoolers. Currently, our Read-Aloud occurs in conjunction with the author and literary studies that take place in the Green (3s), Pre-K (4s), and Junior K (4s/5s) classrooms during the winter months. The Fathers and Special Friends Read-Aloud is a time-honored tradition here at The International Preschools. The annual event coincides with the school’s literacy units, which include book, character, and author studies. While the program was originally founded many years ago to identify male figures as reading role models for young boys, it has evolved simply into a wonderful opportunity for cherished caregivers and loved ones to provide a literacy-based activity for our preschoolers.
The topics of love, friendship, and being kind are underlying themes throughout every school year at The International Preschools. In February, the students at The International Preschools bring these concepts to the forefront of their learning by celebrating Valentine’s Day.
The teachers at all three locations approached this subject in ways that were both similar and unique. Colors commonly associated with Valentine’s Day (red, pink, purple) popped up in many classrooms. In fact, many of our Red Rooms (2s) used this opportunity to begin their color units. Children were invited to wear red, pink, and purple to school on Valentine’s Day, and some classes also held a show-and-share of red items. The “heart” shape was also used as a symbol of Valentine’s Day and love; in one classroom, students learned about the heart muscle and became versed in how to take their own pulses!
To further the concept of friendship and working together, many students participated in whole-group projects such as collaborative collages to promote the idea of functioning as a team. Many classroom writing centers provided older children with the tools to make their own valentines, including word boxes (with Valentine’s Day-related words and phrases for children to reproduce, such as “I Love You”), markers, crayons, pencils, paper, and scissors. This type of open-ended activity allows for students to work at their own ability level, the common goal being that the “process” is more important than the final “product, thereby reinforcing the school learning through play philosophy.
Small group and whole group discussions are important in our preschoolers’ learning. Many classrooms discussed ways that we can express our love and friendship to our families and peers. Children came up with a variety of answers as to how to do this, ranging from “giving hugs” to “playing with friends.”

Exploring books in the Red Room (2s)
Story time is an important part of your child’s day at The International Preschools. Each day, at least one book is read aloud to the class that is related to the current classroom theme. During these first days and weeks of school, most teachers focus on getting children acquainted with the daily routines inside their classroom, in addition to following simple rules: cleaning up after themselves after choice time and snack, hanging their coats and backpacks in their cubbies, and playing cooperatively with their peers, to name a few. The books read aloud at IPS during the month of September often center around the topic of the first day of school.
